Background -+

Legislator James Maloney works, since 1997, for the Town of Ulster as well as the Town of Kingston as the Towns Assessor. Previously, he worked for many years as a real estate appraiser. He maintains the highly coveted I.A.O. (Institute of Assessing Officers) status.  In the Town Assessor position, Jim has fought New York State three times to secure tax savings for Town of Ulster and Town of Kingston property owners. He has been successful all three times saving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Jim’s economic development experience is vast as a result of his long tenures on the Industrial Development Agency Board of Directors, the Town of Ulster’s Economic Development Committee, Planning Board, and the Board of Assessment Review.  He has supported responsible development in the area to promote meaningful employment and broaden the tax base.

Jim gets things done. As Flood Coordinator, he worked with Town, County, State, and Federal officials to help the residents affected by the recent flooding and to secure funding for our damaged infrastructure. As a Legislator, Jim sponsored the Flood Assessment Relief Act of 2005, signed into law by former Governor Pataki.  In addition, he has sponsored other quality of life and economic development policies affecting Ulster County residents including: a resolution to help STOP the Eddyville Mine, a resolution that finalized the agreement and allowed for the creation of the East Kingston Water District, a resolution to give our Seniors and Veterans the maximum tax exemption benefit allowed by New York State law, and wrote and sponsored the only resolution to obtain more sales tax revenue for the Town of Ulster.

Jim is a life long resident of the Town of Ulster. He graduated Kingston High School in 1975 and attended both SUNY Ulster and SUNY New Paltz. He currently lives in the home where he grew up, with his wife, Brenda.
