Kingston, NY – Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announces that Ulster County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving.  The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on May 25th and will end on May 29th. Law enforcement agencies throughout New York State will collaborate and will be out in force in this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired driving-related injuries and deaths.

“I want every resident to be safe as they attend the many ceremonies and events that will be occurring throughout the Memorial Day weekend,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein. “I encourage anyone who is traveling on the roadways this holiday to plan ahead and appoint a designated driver ahead of time if necessary or arrange for alternative transportation like ridesharing or taxis.  Life is too precious to be cut short, so I urge everyone to be responsible and not drive impaired.”

The STOP-DWI Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association with additional funding from the STOP-DWI Foundation courtesy of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.  The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day.

Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving. In 2017, as part of the STOP-DWI traffic enforcement period New York State troopers arrested nearly 240 people for DWI issued 3,599 tickets for speeding, 290 tickets for distracted driving, 2,312 tickets for seatbelt violations and 218 Move Over Law violations over the Memorial Day weekend.
