Kingston, NY – Ulster County Executive Mike Hein and Commissioner of Health Dr. Carol Smith were joined by representatives from Radio Woodstock/WDST 100.1 and local chefs at Mother Earth’s Storehouse in Kingston this week to present certificates to the six winners of the Ulster County Healthy School Lunch Contest.  The chefs/judges awarded gift certificates to local restaurants and merchants to the winners for their healthy school lunch recipe.  The six winners are:

“I want to thank WDST, the chefs and restaurants, as well as everyone who submitted an entry for helping us make this a fun way to share healthy choices,” said County Executive Hein.  “This contest allowed parents the opportunity to share their great recipes, giving others new ideas for nutritious school lunches.  Physical activity and good food choices promote healthy living, helping to move our community closer to the goal of making Ulster County the healthiest County in New York State.”

“We know the United States Department of Agriculture is working closely with schools to improve the nutritional standards for foods and snacks served in the cafeteria and on premises, however, a significant number of parents send their children to school with a lunch prepared at home. This promotion helped to educate parents on the importance of a nutritious lunch and it also provided them with an opportunity to share tasty and healthy lunch ideas,” said Dr. Carol Smith.

The Healthy School Lunch Contest was an initiative of the County Executive and the Ulster County Department of Health (UCDOH), in association with Radio Woodstock/WDST, designed to raise awareness of the important role that a healthy and nutritious school lunch plays in helping to prevent chronic disease and in maximizing a child’s academic performance. During the contest, WDST listeners, throughout Ulster County, were invited to submit and share healthy school lunch recipes, based on nutritional guidelines provided by UCDOH.  To view all of the recipes submitted please go to the Ulster County Department of Health website: http://ulstercountyny.gov/health/health-mental-health/news-and-current-issues .
