A Message from the Office for the Aging Director

Dear Ulster County Older Adults!

How can it be April already?? One quarter of the year gone – so quickly! We made it through all the very cold days, but cold is good for certain things like letting the earth rest, killing germs, killing mosquito larvae and ticks, helping aid in lowering body temps to sleep better at night, helping mental acuity (we all need that!) and many other things. So don’t avoid it, breathe it in deeply, and enjoy your clearer thinking and better sleep!

We are planning some different things this year and hope to offer some help to those for whom financial burdens and budgeting and paperwork are overwhelming, especially if it’s new. If someone else managed your joint finances, and now you are responsible, these classes may help – one is April 15 in Wallkill, and another one is scheduled for later in the year. We think these will be very helpful for older adults to help plan your financial life and organize your necessary paperwork.

We are also offering classes in helpful subjects such as Medicare 101, Emergency Preparedness, Scams, and Estate Planning as well, as many folks will want to explore these options. If your group of older adults wants to hear something specific, let our office know – maybe we can do some research and help with that. Also, if you are thinking about retiring, and need to explore Medicare options, please call our office as we can help with that process.

In partnership with the Ulster County Department of Health, we will be promoting a half mile walk on April 9 (rain date April 10) on the O & W trailhead on Washington Avenue in Kingston – come join us! 6,000 steps a day can help your heart health, and you’ll be outside with friends and community! See the Save a Date card in this issue.

Our new meals purveyor, Brooklyn Kitchen, is settling in and learning the routes in our very large and rural County. We are partnering with them now for specialty meals and also Home Delivered and Community Café meals as well.

In Health! (Don’t forget the walk!)
