Exhibit - Kingston's 350th Anniversary

June 8, 2002

Dear Visitor,

On this the occasion of the 350th Anniversary of the Settlement of Kingston, I am very pleased to welcome you to the Ulster County Records Center and to this presentation of the records of the Dutch Court at Wiltwyck.

These records document the proceedings of the first municipal court at Wiltwyck granted by formal charter by Director General Petrus Stuyvesant on May 16, 1661. Part of an eight volume series dated 1661-1712, and written primarily in Dutch, they show the date of the court session, the presiding justices, litigants, charges, testimony, sentence and disposition of the case. The series was translated to English c. 1900 by Dingman Versteeg and indexed shortly thereafter under the supervision of Wheeler B. Melius in Albany.

As clerk of the courts and custodian of court records, this office undertook a comprehensive conservation project to ensure the preservation of these historic documents in 1991. A portion of the records, those on view today, have been conserved and the remainder are at the moment undergoing treatment in a project funded by the New York State Archives.

Thank you for your interest in the rich history of our community. And thank you for joining me in this celebration. Happy Birthday Kingston!

Sincerely,

Albert Spada
Ulster County Clerk
