DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled welding.  The work is carried out in accordance with established procedures and involves the performance of welding and cutting using electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding equipment.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level employee with leeway allowed to exercise independent judgment in the details of the work.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinates.  Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the welding trade; ability to do brazing and cast iron welding with gas; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral or written instructions; mechanical aptitude; good hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; dependability; physical condition commensurate to the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of full-time paid experience as a welder.

Note: An apprenticeship or vocational/ technical training may be substituted for up to one year of the experience as required above

Special Requirement for Positions in Ulster County Department of Public Works: Candidates for employment in this position, on an open-competitive basis, must possess a valid NYS Class B (CDL) License with required endorsements, if any, at time of appointment.

Candidates for employment in this position, on a promotional basis, must be eligible for NYS Class B (CDL) License with required endorsements, if any, at time of appointment, and must possess such license by the end of their probationary term.

Special Note: In accordance with Federal Highway Administration (HWA) 49CFR382, all prospective employees will undergo drug/alcohol testing prior to appointment and will undergo random drug/alcohol testing during the course of employment.

Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice System or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check.
