County Executive Mike Hein Announces 5th Annual Healthy Ulster County Week: May 2 - May 10, 2015

Posted April 28, 2015

Lloyd, NY- This morning, County Executive Mike Hein was joined by Commissioner of Health and Mental Health Dr. Carol Smith, and Ulster County business and community leaders at Tony Williams Park to officially declare May 2, 2015 – May 10, 2015 as the 5th Annual Healthy Ulster County Week. During Healthy Ulster County Week, special events, services and promotions are being offered by local businesses and community organizations to encourage Ulster County residents to live healthy lifestyles, in the ongoing effort to make Ulster County the healthiest county in New York.

“I want to thank all of the businesses and community organizations that are participating in the 5th Annual Healthy Ulster County Week, and helping to encourage Ulster County residents to make healthy choices,” said County Executive Hein. “The goal of making Ulster County the healthiest county in New York State is an important initiative that affects us all. This week will see events, services, and promotions that will encourage residents to eat well, exercise, and be conscious of the overall health of themselves and their friends and families.”

The County Executive continued, “As a part of my commitment to public health and quality life, it is my goal to provide all Ulster County residents access to a world-class, four season rail-trail system. Our rail-trails are a great place to practice a healthy lifestyle, whether you prefer hiking, biking or walking. Ultimately, our goal is to connect the beautiful Ashokan Reservoir with the popular Walkway Over The Hudson. In addition to our own significant investment in connecting and enhancing the system, New York City Department of Environmental Protection has earmarked $2.5 million to help construct an 11.5 mile trail along the north shore of the Ashokan Reservoir, which would allow the public to have access to this area for the first time in over 100 years. The DEP has also committed to contributing more funds to construct trailheads with public parking, sanitary facilities and informational kiosks along the trail. At the Highland end of the trail system we are working with New York Department of Transit and Department of Environmental Conservation to connect Lloyd with New Paltz.”

In addition to the events, services, and promotions being held during Healthy Ulster County Week, the first Hike, Bike, or Walk Challenge is being held to help promote active lifestyles and outdoor recreation among residents. To participate, individuals or groups can hike, bike, or walk on any trail in Ulster County during May 2, 2015- May 10, 2015 and take a picture of themselves or their group. Then, by submitting their picture to the County Executive’s office via email, macq[at]co.ulster.ny[dot]us, they will be selected to be featured on the Healthy Ulster County webpage. Every entrant will receive a certificate of recognition signed by the County Executive.

“Being active helps promote overall health and fitness, and prevents many chronic diseases. Children are recommended to spend at least one hour per day engaged in physical activity; and adults over the age of 18 should spend a minimum of two hours per week enjoying some physical activity. Fortunately, in Ulster County, thanks to County Executive Hein’s leadership, we have access to one of the finest rail trail systems in the nation, which makes getting the proper amount of exercise fun and accessible. Whether you like to hike, bike, or walk, I strongly encourage everyone to get together with friends, family, or go by yourself, for a great outdoor experience on one of our many excellent trails.” said Dr. Carol Smith, Ulster County Commissioner of Health and Mental Health.
