ARIZONA MAN INDICTED AND REMANDED TO ULSTER COUNTY
JAIL IN ASSISTED SUICIDE CASE

Kingston, NY—On Friday, February 2, 2024, Stephen Miller, age 85, of Tucson, Arizona, was arraigned on an indictment charging him with Assault in the First Degree, Manslaughter in the Second Degree, and Assault in the Second Degree. He was remanded to the Ulster County Jail by the Honorable Bryan Rounds after a bail hearing, with cash bail set in the amount of $500,000.

The indictment arises out of an incident on November 9, 2023, during which an individual was found unresponsive by the cleaning staff of the Super 8 Motel in the City of Kingston.  Kingston Police Department, Fire Department and other Emergency Personnel responded to the scene, determining that the victim died by means of assisted suicide.  The ensuing investigation uncovered that Miller had traveled from Arizona and had been with the victim a short while before and at the time of death.

A collaborative investigation by the Kingston Police Department and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office resulted in identifying Miller and his subsequent appearance in Ulster County Court for his arraignment.

The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.  This case is being prosecuted by Special Victims Bureau Chief Assistant District Attorney Jenna Hastings. The defendant is represented by Jeffrey Lichtman and Jeffrey Einhorn of New York City.
