Increase In Funding Allows Youth To Earn $11 Per Hour
Kingston, NY – Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announces that the County has received $308,048 from New York State’s Office of Disability and Temporary Assistance to fund a summer jobs program that helps young people from low-income households gain valuable work experience and a paycheck. The award, which is a nine percent increase in funds from last year, will allow the County to hire and pay young people $11 dollars an hour for jobs in many different positions.
“I am incredibly proud of the wide variety of businesses and not-for-profits throughout Ulster County who provide worksites as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program,” said County Executive Hein. “This program allows our youth to gain valuable work experience and skills such as following a supervisor’s directions or dealing courteously with customers. Gaining real job experience is beneficial to the young employee, the County’s economic development efforts and the workforce as a whole.”
The program has private and public worksites throughout Kingston and in every village and town in Ulster County. Applicants are required to complete an interview and orientation that includes job readiness skills and financial literacy before beginning the five-week jobs program on June 25, 2018. All positions pay $11 an hour. The application deadline is Tuesday, May 29, 2018.
The Summer Youth Employment Program is overseen by Ulster County’s Office of Employment and Training (OET) and the Ulster County Workforce Investment Board. The program employs approximately 140-150 youth between the ages of fourteen to twenty who meet program eligibility requirements. Any young person living in a household whose income is at or below 200% of poverty; or whose family receives cash public assistance; food stamps or HEAP or the youth receives SSI are eligible.
