Ulster County Memorial Roll of Honor

The Ulster County Memorial Roll of Honor is dedicated to service members from Ulster County who made the ultimate sacrifice in our nation’s call to duty.

Veterans consider the monument area to solemn, honored ground.  Please be respectful and quiet when in or near the stones.

About the Memorial

• While there are many war memorials throughout the County, are all specific to a particular war or town from the particular era in which they were built.  No town has a memorial for all wars fought.
• Consequently, some war dead are not honored anywhere in the County, and the County Executive decided to remedy that to ensure every Ulster County serviceman killed or missing in action . . .  from all wars . . . is honored at a Memorial.
• The monument you see today in front of the County Office building is the culmination of that initiative . . . to fund, research and design a fitting Memorial.
• The Memorial Design was conceptualized by a cross-section of Veterans from around the County.  Name research was painstakingly done by a volunteer committee of Veterans and community members.
• Key design elements include:
  • Five granite stones, arranged in a Pentagon . . . a historical symbol of leadership.
  • A Battle Cross/Marker in the center, universally known to represent the tragedy of a fallen service member in battle.
  • Prominence in front of the County Office Building, while also displaying a sense of enclosure to preserve a solemn separation from foot traffic.
