130-150 Ulster County Youth Expected to Participate
Kingston, NY- County Executive Mike Hein announced today that Ulster County has received $244,631.00 through New York State for Ulster County’s Summer Youth Employment Program. The program takes Ulster County residents ranging in age from 14-20 and provides them with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning a paycheck in Ulster County over the summer. This years funding is an increase of nearly 12% from previous years and will allow Ulster County to give more young people the opportunity to participate in the program.
“I am incredibly proud and grateful to the wide variety of businesses and not-for-profit organizations throughout Ulster County that provide worksites as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program,” said County Executive Hein. “This program allows our youth to gain valuable work experience and develop important skills and provides them with a strong foundation before they enter the workforce full time as adults. By providing these opportunities to Ulster County’s youth we are able to better develop our County’s workforce and economy as a whole.”
This summer’s program has also seen an increase in worksites with a record high of 81 private and public businesses participating throughout Ulster County. The city of Kingston and the towns of Hurley, Esopus, Rosendale, Saugerties, New Paltz, Plattekill, Ellenville, Rochester, Marbletown, Lloyd, Woodstock, Olive, Shandaken, Gardiner and Wallkill will all have participating venues. All worksites pay $9.00 an hour to program participants, and all participants are required to complete an interview and orientation before starting the 5 week program on July 6th. This year Ulster County is expecting between 130-150 youth to participate in the program.
