KINGSTON, N.Y. - Ulster County Executive Mike Hein is pleased to announce his appointment of Geoffrey Miller as Ulster County Historian. The County Historian coordinates the work of the several town historians and local historical societies throughout the County, and acts as an advocate and resource for local history and historic preservation. In his role as County Historian, Mr. Miller will also provide guidance, research, and public presentations on topics dealing with Ulster County history. Mr. Miller replaces Anne Gordon, who is retiring after serving eight years as Ulster County Historian.
“We are fortunate in Ulster County to be steeped in history, and we are committed to protecting and preserving our heritage,” said County Executive Hein. “Geoffrey Miller’s passion for Ulster County’s rich and storied history combined with his extensive knowledge and dedication to education make him eminently qualified to serve as Ulster County Historian. I look forward to the County Legislature confirming his appointment.”
Mr. Miller currently serves as the Chair of the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History, where he supervises the restoration of a 19th century structure and its development as a center devoted to documenting, embracing, and promoting regional cultural history and diversity. Mr. Miller also has an extensive background as an educator, most recently in the Rondout Valley Central School District. He has authored and presented significant historical exhibits and projects, with topics spanning across Ulster County and the Hudson Valley Region and is an active member of the Friends of Historic Kingston, Hudson River Maritime Museum and Arts Society of Kingston. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Ulster County Legislature.
