Ulster County Exploring Partnership With SUNY Ulster, The Town Of Marlborough and the Marlboro Central School District To Create An Additional Community College Extension Site
Kingston, N.Y. – Building on the success of the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster which opened in 2015, Ulster County Executive Mike Hein is focused on continually expanding partnerships like those between SUNY Ulster, the Marlboro Central School District, the Town of Marlborough and Ulster County Government to increase access to higher education for more residents of Southern Ulster County. The proposed Marlborough SUNY Ulster extension would be co-located with the Marlborough Town Hall in what was formerly the site of the Milton Elementary School. The fact that the repurposed building previously served as a school makes it uniquely suited to be seamlessly transitioned, in part, into a higher education learning center.
Michael P. Hein, Ulster County Executive
“As we continue our focus on providing valuable tools to help our residents compete in an ever changing global economy, improved access to higher education is essential. I am thrilled that Ulster County Community College which is ranked as a top ten New York Community College continues to adapt and evolve to best serve our residents,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein. “I want to commend Supervisor Al Lanzetta and the Town of Marlborough, Superintendent Michael Brooks and the Marlboro Central School District, as well as Dr. Roberts and his team at SUNY Ulster and our dedicated partners in the Ulster County Legislature for their tireless efforts to benefit the citizens of Ulster County. Together, my administration and the Ulster County Legislature are focused on delivering for each and every one of the 180,000 residents of Ulster County. The success of the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster has shown the importance of expanding higher education opportunities to our communities and the impact it has had on our students. This new center would increase access and convenience to higher education for residents in the southern part of our County just like the Kingston Center has done for the City’s mid-town area. By partnering with the Marlboro Central School District, the Town of Marlborough and SUNY Ulster, we have the ability to leverage state education funding all without impacting our property taxpayers.”
Dr. Alan P. Roberts, President, SUNY Ulster
“We are proud of the STRIVE Project at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster and are excited to explore this opportunity of expanding to Southern Ulster County while continuing our commitment to providing higher education and training opportunities in our County,” said Dr. Alan P. Roberts, President of SUNY Ulster.
Al Lanzetta, Supervisor of the Town of Marlborough
“I am excited to share County Executive Hein’s vision to create a SUNY Ulster extension in the Town of Marlborough. This will make it easier for residents in southern Ulster County to have affordable higher education opportunities closer to home,” said Town of Marlborough Supervisor Al Lanzetta. “This effort will provide greater opportunity for everyone interested in continuing education and the development of skills that will invite innovation and business into the Southern Ulster region."
Michael M. Brooks, Superintendent, Marlboro Central School District
"Marlboro Central School District is looking forward to the potential that can be realized by forging a relationship with SUNY Ulster,” said Michael Brooks, Superintendent of Marlboro Central School District. “Students in the south eastern region of Ulster County will be well served by a SUNY Ulster extension located in Marlboro at the Milton school building. The Marlboro Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools have been steadfast in their support of providing collegiate opportunities for our children and I want to thank County Executive Hein for realizing the potential and supporting this endeavor. Having a SUNY Ulster center located in the community will provide easier access to programs and ignite a relationship that has endless possibilities."
The Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster opened in 2015 at the site of the former Sophie Finn Elementary School on Mary’s Avenue in Kingston. The college hosts day and evening classes for students, continuing education classes for adults and is also the home to the Hudson Valley P-Tech Academy, an advanced science and technology program for high school students and the only one of its kind located on at a college facility.
