Statement From Ulster County Executive Mike Hein Regarding The Pre-Payment Of Property Taxes Prior To The New Federal Tax Laws

Posted December 26, 2017

UPDATE – The Governor’s Office has provided additional information and guidance regarding the impact of Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order dated December 22, 2017.  The Order does not affect the collection of school or village taxes and therefore, neither of those taxes can be prepaid.  Town tax collectors have the discretion to accept only General Tax (county/town) payments early.

“As someone who understands exactly how to responsibly and sustainably lower county property taxes without sacrificing services, I am deeply concerned about the short-sighted and likely harmful tax policy emanating from Washington, D.C. Having said that, if there is any opportunity to reduce the negative impact on Ulster County residents I am going to do everything in my power to do so.  Accordingly, I have directed the Ulster County Commissioner of Finance to expedite all necessary actions and procedures to eliminate any county impediments to accepting property tax pre-payments by the town and city tax collectors.”

Anyone who believes it may be beneficial for them to pre-pay their 2018 taxes in response to the recently enacted federal tax laws and Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order of December 22, 2017 and wishes to pre-pay their 2018 property taxes should contact their local tax collector using the information below:
