KINGSTON, NY - Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger has announced that Ulster County Government will host a Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on Friday, June 16, followed by a screening of the movie, Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal.
The Juneteenth Freedom Celebration event will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at T.R. Gallo Waterfront Park on West Strand Street in the City of Kingston. The celebration will feature a drum processional and libation honoring the land and ancestors, history presentation, a presentation by the Ulster County Truth & Reconciliation Commission, and a Juneteenth proclamation by the County Executive.

The celebration will continue with a film screening of Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal, followed by a panel discussion about the film and how lessons from the film can be applied today. The screening and panel discussion will be held at the Ulster County Restorative Justice Center at 733 Broadway, Kingston NY from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The film explores how, in the 1960s, federally funded urban renewal projects destroyed hundreds of working-class urban communities across America. The film chronicles how one such project impacted the Rondout neighborhood of the City of Kingston, demolishing nearly 500 buildings, displacing thousands of people, and destroying a Black middle-class neighborhood. The panel will feature filmmaker Lynn Woods, community members who experienced the urban renewal period, and subject matter experts.
