Public Input Sought to Gather Design Feedback

The Ulster County Planning Department is launching the Midtown Linear Park Community Space Project to develop a design for an area of the Midtown Linear Park in Kingston between Cornell and Downs Streets.

The County seeks to create a safe, accessible, attractive, and fun place for the community in this area, thoughtfully designed to be inviting for people of all ages and abilities to engage in both active and passive recreational activities.

The Planning Department and its consultants, PORT Architecture and Urbanism, KaN Landscape Design, and Verma Engineering, have planned for robust community outreach, including several events from April to October to ensure the design will reflect the community’s needs and desires. The consultants are also working with youth from the YMCA Farm Project and PlaceCorps as part of their design team to develop concepts and ideas for the space.

During the week of April 7, staff from the County Planning Department, the consultants, and members of the YMCA and PlaceCorps Youth Design Teams will be hosting a series of community pop-ups to get the word out about the project and gather public input on initial design ideas for the space. Community members are encouraged to attend and share ideas at one of the kick-off pop-up events:

  • Monday, April 7 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., with PlaceCorps, on the Midtown Linear Park between Cornell and Downs Streets
  • Tuesday, April 8 from 3 - 6 p.m., with YMCA Farm Youth at 601 Broadway, in front of the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston
  • Wednesday, April 9 from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at People’s Place Cafe, 17 St. James Street, in Kingston
  • Wednesday, April 9 from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. with YMCA Farm Youth, in the YMCA entrance, 507 Broadway, in Kingston

A dedicated page for the project can be found on the Participate Ulster site for the public to stay informed, provide input online, and follow the project's progress: https://participate.ulstercountyny.gov/midtown-linear-park.

The Midtown Linear Park Community Space Design Project aims to transform this area of the Midtown Linear Park into a multi-use environment as part of Ulster County’s broader vision to establish a cohesive Countywide trail network. The Park is owned by the County and managed by the City of Kingston through a collaborative agreement.

If special accommodations are required for members of the public to participate or for further information on the project, please contact Deputy Director of Planning Kristen Wilson at (845) 340-3338 or by email at kwil[at]co.ulster.ny[dot]us.
