Reliability in job performance is of paramount importance when it comes to K9s and their duties. Each dog's ongoing proficiency training ensures the dog will act and perform according to expectations and standards. Each K9 and handler is required to maintenance-train twice a month to keep fresh what they have learned in the basic K9 academies. Additionally every three years, they must pass a strict examination from a K9 examiner to continue certification by New York State. Working towards that goal, all Sheriff's Office handlers and their dogs exceed the number of hours of monthly maintenance-training specified by New York State. With K9 trainers on hand, Ulster County has been putting its handlers and outside agency handlers through Narcotics, Explosive and Patrol/Tracking/Article Detection schools locally. If anyone has questions or requests about our program, please contact us.

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office K9 Memorial

A K9 memorial was constructed at the Law Enforcement Center as a way to remember our fallen four-legged partners who gave their all to protect their handlers and the citizens of Ulster County.

I Gave My All

I am a deputy in a canine crew. I have been trained to see it through. When danger is near my ears perk up. They taught me that when I was a pup. I am often there to protect your rights, my presence sometimes hinders fights, and I never attack with thought to kill, when subduing one, my job I fulfill. I never worry a single thought, as to how I will fare at a certain spot. The love I have for a handler's care is all I need, each day to fare. And if some day my luck turns bad, I will relish the joys I have ever had. To be with men who stand for good, in a special kind of "brotherhood." The story's end by now you know, of how I tried for a better show, when I was called and I gave my all.
