Ulster County offers resources for people who experienced sexual assault. Upon arrival to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley: Mary's Ave Campus, hospital staff will gather triage information and notify the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The SANE nurse works alongside a Crime Victims Advocate to ensure that survivors of sexual assault are treated in a compassionate manner and provided optimum care based on the survivor's wishes. A SANE nurse is trained on advanced methods of evidence collection, including NYS Sexual Offence Evidence Collection Kit, photographs of injuries, and documentation of the survivor's experience. The survivor will be educated on evidence collection options and consent by the survivor is required for each step of the exam.  The SANE nurse and Advocate can assist with police contact and options for reporting the assault. Police contact is not necessary; the survivor may choose to release evidence to police or store the evidence for up to 20 years.

After evidence collection, the SANE nurse will provide options for treatments and medications and communicate the survivor's wishes with the Emergency Department doctor. The Crime Victims Advocate can assist with safe housing and transportation after hospital discharge.

You do not need health insurance to obtain care related to sexual violence. New York State Office of Victims Services offers funding to cover the cost of medical care after sexual assault, including the initial emergency department visit, STI testing/treatment, and a sexual assault exam.
