Impaired Driving Crackdown Runs February 1st- 4th, 2019

Kingston, NY - Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announces that police agencies across Ulster County will participate in a statewide special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving during Super Bowl Weekend, February 1st through February 4th, 2019. 

“The Super Bowl is supposed to be a night of fun for football fans of all ages, I urge our residents to designate a responsible driver before the big game begins or arrange for alternative transportation like ridesharing or taxis so it can remain a great night,” said County Executive Mike Hein. “We want fans to remember that even one drink can impair their judgement and we want everyone to stay safe. I would like to thank all of the county, state and local law enforcement agencies helping to stop impaired driving and save lives by participating in this statewide STOP-DWI crackdown.”

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York state have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug-related vehicular fatalities, too many lives are still being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers.  Highly visible and publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving and help save lives. Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. Sobriety checkpoints and patrols play a key part in raising awareness about the problem.  

The STOP-DWI Super Bowl Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association with additional funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and implemented by the STOP-DWI Foundation. The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season, New Year’s and St. Patrick’s Day.
