$18.62 per Hour (Grade 6)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the operation of highway construction equipment in the performance of recurring manual work related to highway maintenance, repair and construction activities. The employee is also responsible for the routine care of the equipment and for following prescribed safety procedures in its operation. This class differs from that of a Construction Equipment Operator I by virtue of the fact that the construction equipment used requires a greater degree of skill and experience and the operation of a Tractor Trailer vehicle. The work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may be exercised over the work of personnel in a lower job class as the specific tasks requires. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of grade-alls, graders, bulldozers, cranes, traxcavator, backhoes and black topping machines and other maintenance construction equipment; good knowledge of the safety procedures and precautions involved in the operation of heavy equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of full-time paid, or its’ part -time equivalent, experience in the operation of construction equipment such as: grade-alls, graders, traxcavators, bulldozers, cranes, backhoes and road surfacing machines.

Special Requirement: At time of appointment, must possess a valid New York State Driver's License appropriate for the vehicle and/or construction equipment being operated.

Ulster County employees promoted to a class in direct line of promotion, which requires a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class A (CDL) at the time of a promotional appointment must possess such licensure by the end of their probationary period, not longer than six months.

Special Requirement for Positions in Ulster County Department of Public Works: Candidates for employment in this position must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class A (CDL) License with required endorsements, if any, at time of appointment.

New York State Class A CDL Driver License Vehicle Description:  Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of more than 26,000 lbs, provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of vehicles(s) is more than 10,000 lbs.

Fuel Truck operation may need other requirements (X endorsement).  This is not required unless assigned to the operation of a Fuel Truck. 

Special Note: In accordance with Federal Highway Administration (HWA) 49CFR382, all prospective employees will undergo drug/alcohol testing prior to appointment and will undergo random drug/alcohol testing during the course of employment.

Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice System or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check. This position will require a criminal background check and a candidate will be required to complete and sign a Criminal Background Investigation Release Form.  Upon a conditional employment offer, a candidate will be required to be fingerprinted accordingly.
