DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the performance of patrol work at a beach or swimming pool and insuring the safety of bathers.  The work is carried out in accordance with established procedures and involves observing those using the facility and, if necessary, providing assistance.  The incumbent has considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies because an error in judgment may result in the loss of life.  The class differs from that of Senior Lifeguard in that Lifeguard is the entry-level position of the series whereas Senior Lifeguard is at the second level and has greater responsibility.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level employee, with leeway allowed in responding to emergencies.  Supervision of others is not normally a responsibility of the class.  Does related work as required.
