DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve responsibility for the receipt of approved application and registration documents and their processing by manual devices or through means of the operation of a teleprocessing device. Data from an application or registration document that has been previously approved and edited by a Motor Vehicle Application Examiner is verified and typed into the teleprocessing device. The Motor Vehicle Cashier must also be able to determine causes of malfunction or rejection responses from the computer and follow proper procedures for correction. The duties also involve the collection of fees for registration or licensing and making change and may involve the computation of fees. At times this involves a great amount of money and incumbents are held personally responsible for shortages. The work is performed under general supervision with supervisory employees deciding questions of an unusual nature.
SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: Written test will cover knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
1. Cashiering Principles and Practices
These questions are designed to test for an understanding of such things as proper cashiering practices; terminology; and cashiering issues pertaining to currency, checks and other negotiable instruments.
2. Coding/decoding information
These questions test for the ability to follow a set of coding rules. Some questions will require you to code information by converting certain information into letters or numbers. Other questions will require you to decode information by determining if the information that has already been converted into letters or numbers is correct. Complete directions will be provided; no previous knowledge of or training in any coding system is required.
3. Handling Money
These questions test for the ability to count money and make change correctly. Pictures of money will be used to simulate the transactions.
4. Name and number checking
These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.
5. Understanding and interpreting written material based on the Vehicle and Traffic law, rules and regulations
These questions test for the ability to read, understand and interpret various provisions of the above named law, rules or regulations. This part of the test will contain several reading selections based on or extracted from a passage of legal text. The candidate must read each selection and then answer one or more questions based upon it. All factual information needed to answer these questions is contained in the reading selections. No prior knowledge of that information is necessary to answer the questions correctly.
The New York State Department of Civil Service has not prepared a test guide for this examination. However, candidates may find information in the publication "How to take a written test" helpful in preparing for this test. PERFORMANCE TESTS: Performance tests are qualifying (pass/fail), if you pass the performance test(s), your final score for the exam will be the score that you achieve on the written test. Candidates may be invited to the performance test(s) in the order of the scores they achieve on the written test. Ulster County reserves the right to give the performance test(s) to only as many candidates as are needed to fill available vacancies. Performance tests will be given at a later date. Candidates will be notified by mail.

Typetest is a computerized test of keying speed and accuracy. It utilizes a split screen format and a standard keyboard. The computer program requires no prior knowledge of software.
The test is five minutes long and is preceded by a three-minute practice session. The computerized typing test screen is divided into two windows. Candidates must type the text from the upper window into the lower window. Candidates type as much of the text as they can during the time available.
In order to pass the test, candidates must enter the text at a rate of at least 25 words per minute, with at least 90% accuracy. For example, if a candidate enters the text at 25 words per minute, the maximum allowable number of errors is 6. A word is defined as five characters.
