$20.41 (Grade 6.5)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks related to the construction and repair of bridges, culverts, guide rail and bridge rail which may include carpentry work, masonry work, iron work, welding work, metal fabrication, steel setting and erecting, and the operation of various small and large construction equipment. This class differs from that of a Bridge Crew Worker I by virtue of the fact that activities and the construction equipment used requires a greater degree of skill and experience. The employee may be required to perform work above and below ground level in all weather conditions. The work is performed under general supervision of a higher-level employee.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of a sub-crew on smaller projects. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of bridge construction and maintenance practices; good knowledge of the safety procedures and precautions involved in the operation of small and large construction equipment; working knowledge of the various tools and equipment used in bridge repair, maintenance and construction; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to work above and below ground level; ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; dependability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of full-time paid, or its’ part-time equivalent, experience in the construction, maintenance or repair of bridges.

Special Requirement: At time of appointment, must possess a valid New York State Driver's License appropriate for the vehicle and/or construction equipment being operated.

Special Requirement for Positions in Ulster County Department of Public Works:

Candidates for employment in this position must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class A (CDL) License with required endorsements, if any, within six (6) months of hire.

New York State Class A CDL Driver License Vehicle Description:  Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of more than 26,000 lbs, provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of vehicles(s) is more than 10,000 lbs.

New York State Class B CDL Driver License Vehicle Description:  Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs.  Class B may tow vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 lbs. or less, or may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 lbs. providing the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is not more than 26,000 lbs.

Special Note: In accordance with Federal Highway Administration (HWA) 49CFR382, all prospective employees will undergo drug/alcohol testing prior to appointment and will undergo random drug/alcohol testing during the course of employment.

Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice Services or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check.
