Probation Officer Trainee (Spanish Speaking)/ Provisional/ Full-Time/ Benefited

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class performs varied duties related to investigation and supervision in a local probation agency while participating in a continuous in service training program. The trainee level is used to recruit to the probation field college graduates with a career interest in probation.  Trainees receive on the job training while performing duties of a limited professional nature under close and continuing supervision.  Except for the required ability to speak, read and write the Spanish language, as well as the English language, this class is identical to that of Probation Officer Trainee. Trainee appointments are for a period of one year, following which incumbents receiving satisfactory ratings will be advanced to the title of Probation Officer (Spanish Speaking) without further examination. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of social sciences, including sociology, psychology and economics; working knowledge of social service programs and other community resources; working knowledge of factors related to crime and delinquency; ability to read, write, speak, communicate and understand English and Spanish; working oral and written language proficiency in the Spanish language with understandable, smooth expression at a conversational level of communication; good judgment in dealing with people; ability to understand, interpret and prepare written material.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or one recognized by the New York State Education Department, with at least thirty (30) credit hours in the social or behavioral sciences.

Special Requirement: Incumbents in this position must have a working oral and written language proficiency in the Spanish language with understandable, smooth expression at a conversational level of communication by the end of their probationary period.

Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice Services or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check.

IF COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IS INDICATED; TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AND SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO ALL APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.  A CANDIDATE LACKING THE REQUIRED TRANSCRIPTS WILL RECEIVE A CONDITIONAL APPROVAL PENDING THE RECEIPT OF TRANSCRIPTS.
