DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  A sanitarian under supervision performs professional activities which may include the investigation and inspection of environmental health control.  He investigates nuisance conditions, interprets laboratory reports, provides training, assistance and supervision of subordinate personnel, prepares reports and recommendations and testifies at enforcement proceedings.  Does related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of environmental health practices; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to prepare and deliver effective talks and secure the interest and cooperation of civic groups and officials; ability to train others in environmental health work; ability to develop good public relations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either;
A.    Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with thirty (30) semester credit hours in the physical or biological sciences, and satisfactory completion of a training course approved by the New York State Health Department within one year of appointment; OR
B.     Five (5) years of experience as a Public Health Technician deemed satisfactory by the local commissioner of health and satisfactory completion of a training course approved by the New York State Health Department at the time of appointment.
IF COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IS INDICATED; TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AND SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO ALL APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.  A CANDIDATE LACKING THE REQUIRED TRANSCRIPTS WILL RECEIVE A CONDITIONAL APPROVAL PENDING THE RECEIPT OF TRANSCRIPTS.
Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions:  In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice Services or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check.
If this is an Ulster County position it will require a criminal background check and a candidate will be required to complete and sign a Criminal Background Investigation Release Form.  Upon a conditional employment offer a candidate will be required to be fingerprinted accordingly.
