DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is skilled work involving responsibility for training and working with a crew in the pruning, trimming, transplanting and felling of trees.  The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and standard safety procedures.  Supervision is exercised over the activities of tree trimmers and laborers.  Does related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the practices, tools, materials and equipment used in tree trimming and felling; thorough knowledge of the types of ropes, knots, rigging devices and safety devices used in tree trimming; good knowledge of the transplanting and pruning of trees and shrubs; working knowledge of tree anatomy and tree surgery; ability to plan and lead the work of others; ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with the public; ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with and between crew members; ability to work at a considerable height under dangerous conditions; dependability; initiative and resourcefulness; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: : Three (3) years of tree trimming experience.
Special Requirement: At time of appointment, must possess a valid New York State Class B CDL Driver's License appropriate for the vehicle and/or construction equipment being operated.
Special Requirement for Positions in Ulster County Department of Public Works: Candidates for employment in this position must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class B (CDL) License with required endorsements, if any, at time of appointment.
New York State Class B CDL Driver License Vehicle Description:  Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, may tow vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, or may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 pounds providing the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is not more than 26,000 pounds.
 Fuel Truck operation may need other requirements (X endorsement).  This is not required unless assigned to the operation of a Fuel Truck. 
Special Note: In accordance with Federal Highway Administration (HWA) 49CFR382, all prospective employees will undergo drug/alcohol testing prior to appointment and will undergo random drug/alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice System or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check. This position will require a criminal background check and a candidate will be required to complete and sign a Criminal Background Investigation Release Form.  Upon a conditional employment offer, a candidate will be required to be fingerprinted accordingly.
