    “On behalf of the county we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our neighbor who passed away. Although exceedingly rare, the Powassan virus and other tick-borne diseases are a serious threat and I encourage everyone to be extra vigilant when taking part in outdoor activities. I have directed our Health Commissioner and County departments to take every step necessary to help prevent the spread of tick-borne diseases including the implementation of an expanded public awareness campaign.” ###

    Kingston, N.Y. – The Ulster County Department of Health was notified today that an Ulster County resident passed away from the Powassan virus, a rare and often serious disease spread by infected ticks. This is the first known case of an individual diagnosed with the Powassan virus in New York State this year. The resident, who lives in Gardiner, had additional underlying health conditions and passed away earlier this week.

    KINGSTON, N.Y. – Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan announced today that the County has maintained its strong ‘AA’ overall credit rating in the latest S&P Global Ratings report. The County’s rating is a result of strong, financial management, budgetary performance, budgetary flexibility, liquidity, and debt and contingent liability position. The County was also noted for its economic growth.

    Ulster County Dedicates Rochester Bridge In The Memory of Arthur D. Lapp, Sr. TOWN OF ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan announces today the dedication of the County Route 6 bridge in Alligerville as the Arthur D. Lapp, Sr. Memorial Bridge in honor of the fire district’s former chief. The bridge carries County Route 6 over the Rondout Creek in the Town of Rochester.

    Test Uncover Illegal Dumping of Heavy Metals and Pesticides Kingston, N.Y. – Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan today announced the issuance of an order to immediately cease and desist the dumping of dangerous materials at the Keryols properties in Saugerties. The order, issued through the County Health Department, requires that the properties stop receiving, “construction and demolition debris contaminated with heavy metals and pesticides.” The order asks for an immediate end to such practices.

    Ulster County Office Building Will Be Open as an Emergency Cooling Center this Weekend  Kingston, N.Y. – With temperatures expected in the high 90’s, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan is opening up the County Office Building this weekend for those who may need a place to cool off. The first floor of the Ulster County Office Building will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00AM to 8:00PM. Additionally, cooling locations are being set up throughout Ulster County with the assistance of municipal governments.

    New Law Banning Single-Use Carry-Out Plastic Bags at Most Retail Locations Goes Into Effect on Monday KINGSTON, N.Y. - Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan, joined by members of the Ulster County Legislature and Judith Enck, former U.S. EPA Regional Administrator, gathered on Friday to kick-off of the Ulster County Bring Your Own Bag Act.  The event was held at the Kingston Plaza and highlighted the readiness of local businesses and consumers for the new law, which goes into effect on Monday.
