BROOKLYN MAN SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON FOR DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED IN SAUGERTIES

Posted June 18, 2024

Kingston, NY—On Thursday June 13, 2024, Tyrone Taylor, age 47, of Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced to one to three years in State Prison on his previously entered plea of guilty to the Class D felony of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated before the Honorable James Farrell.

The indictment stemmed from defendant operating a motor vehicle in an erratic manner on June 10, 2023, swerving all over the road while traveling above the speed limit in the Town of Saugerties portion of the Thruway. Defendant's conduct was so dangerous that four motorists called 911 to report his hazardous driving. During his arrest, defendant placed his hand on a New York State Trooper’s handgun, further exacerbating his dangerousness at the time. He had a .23 blood alcohol level which is three times the legal limit. In addition, his license was revoked from prior DWI convictions in 2021. Defendant was under probation supervision on another DWI case out of New Jersey. This was defendant's fourth DWI arrest since 2021, all taking place while under probation supervision.

District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji said, “This man is a danger to himself and everyone on the road, including families and emergency responders. His persistence to drive drunk despite being under supervision by probation and while his license was suspended signify a selfishness too dangerous to tolerate. Hopefully his time in prison will open his eyes to realize this and to get help with his driving under the influence of alcohol.”

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant Paul V. Derohannesian. The defendant was represented by defense counsel Brandon Hellwig of Albany.
