CARLOS CAAL-CHUB CONVICTED OF SERIOUS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CRIMES FOLLOWING JURY TRIAL IN ULSTER COUNTY COURT

Posted April 14, 2025

Kingston, NY—On April 9, 2025, Carlos Caal Chub, age 30, of Kingston, was convicted of Assault in the Second Degree, Stalking in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Unlawful Imprisonment in the Second Degree, and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following a jury trial before the Honorable Bryan E. Rounds.  The jury trial began on March 31, 2025, with deliberations beginning late in the morning of April 9 and a jury verdict returned by 3 p.m.

On April 20, 2024, Defendant Carlos Caal Chub, age 29, first assaulted the victim, the mother of his daughters, while they were both at a barbeque at 7 Elmendorf Street in the City of Kingston.  Caal Chub first punched her twice in the head after she had intervened in a separate dispute between a different couple in attendance. Caal Chub then took the victim’s phone when he observed her trying to call the police. The victim then left the barbeque to gather her things from their shared residence on Robert Street in the Town of Ulster so she could leave the home with her children; the defendant rang the doorbell repeatedly, but the victim did not allow him to come enter. He then broke into the home through a basement door with a hammer, reaching the victim and punching her for an extended period while she held their infant, rendering her unconscious. He also shoved and harmed their two oldest children. The victim and her children thereafter sought help from employees at the Bowery Dugout on Ulster Avenue. Law enforcement was able to quickly locate and place the defendant in custody. Defendant was then indicted on April 25, 2024 by an Ulster County Grand Jury.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Luba Reznikova, who also serves as the Director of the Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Task Force said, “I am grateful to this jury—they showed awareness of the cycles of domestic violence and reached a result of justice for this victim and her daughters. The combined effort of the Ulster Police Department and our community members was essential in this victim receiving justice.”

Ulster County District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji said, “We all have a role to play in making Ulster County a ‘No Domestic Violence Zone.’ The kindness and care from the employees of the Bowery Dugout, and swift response by officers of the Town of Ulster Police Department, helped stop the violent assault and ultimately to convict defendant for his inhumanity and indignity against his family. I am extremely grateful to the devotion and sacrifices of the ADAs who, despite all the odds and challenges in this case, persevered to make the case to the jury and hold the defendant accountable.”

Senior Felony ADA Luba Reznikova prosecuted this case, with assistance from ADA Anna Thompson. Defendant was represented in the trial by Kingston attorney William D. Pretsch. Sentencing is scheduled for June 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Ulster County Court.
