Posted March 27, 2025

Kingston, NY—Three individuals responsible for a shooting at the Canal Locks Apartment Complex in the Village of Ellenville have pleaded guilty and have all been sentenced to State Prison following an expeditious investigation and prosecution by the Village of Ellenville Police Department and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

On March 8, 2024, at approximately 10:00 pm, three masked men, later identified as Luis Gonzalez Lopez, age 31, Shaquon McGinnis, age 27, and Nathaniel Negron, age 29, all residents of Ellenville, entered the Canal Locks Apartment Complex armed with a loaded firearm and a knife.  They knocked on the door and forcibly entered the apartment, shooting the adult male victim in the arm and then fleeing from the scene. The victim was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center where he received treatment for his injuries and was discharged on March 9.

The Ellenville Police Department began their investigation and were able to identify and arrest the masked perpetrators within two weeks of the shooting. The defendants were arraigned in Town of Wawarsing Court in March of 2024 and have been held at the Ulster County Jail since then.

An Ulster County Grand Jury indicted the three defendants in August of 2024 for Burglary in the First Degree, a class B violent felony, and other related charges.  Thereafter, all three defendants pleaded guilty last year to Burglary in the First Degree. As of March 25, 2025, they have now been sentenced to state prison: Negron - 10 years prison plus 5 years of post-release supervision; McGinnis - 8 years prison plus 5 years of post-release supervision; and Lopez – 6 years prison plus 5 years of post-release supervision. A full order of protection was issued to all three defendants for the protection of the victim. All three convictions and sentences occurred before the Honorable Bryan E. Rounds.

Village of Ellenville Police Chief Philip S. Mattricion said, “I want to thank ADA Cindy Murphy, who prosecuted this case from beginning to end. She worked extremely hard on this case from day one to ensure that the residents of this community feel safe knowing that the DA’s Office will relentlessly pursue those that commit these heinous and violent acts and will mete out the appropriate sentences in accordance with the laws of this State.  Additionally, I want to thank all my partners in law enforcement who helped this agency during the investigation: U.S. Marshals Service, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State police, and City of Kingston Police Department, particularly Sergeant Michael Mills.”

District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji said, “The people of Ellenville deserve to be safe on the streets and in their homes from violent criminals and knuckleheads. Such acts of gun violence threaten everyone and destabilize the community. This Office will do everything legally permissible and work with the Ellenville PD and other law enforcement agencies for a safer Ellenville.”

This case was prosecuted by General Felonies Bureau Chief Cindy Murphy. Defendant Lopez was represented by Middletown attorney Brittany Kessler.  Defendant Negron was represented by Newburgh attorney James Winslow.  Defendant McGinnis was represented by Newburgh attorney Benjamin Greenwald.
