Ulster County District Attorney Announces Indictment of Kingston Man for February 11, 2023 West Hurley Attempted Murder

Posted October 12, 2023

Kingston, NY-- On Thursday October 12, 2023, Mainor Sagastume, age 33, of Kingston, New York, was arraigned on an indictment by an Ulster County Grand Jury for the Felonies of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Stalking in the Second Degree and two counts of Stalking in the Fourth Degree.  Defendant waived extradition from Florida. Defendant was remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail by the Honorable Bryan Rounds.

The indictment stems from a stabbing that took place in the Town of Hurley on February 11, 2023, during which the defendant is alleged to have stabbed the victim multiple times, resulting in critical injuries. The victim then attempted to drive himself to Kingston Hospital and made a 911 from State Route 28 when first responders, specifically personnel from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, administered lifesaving treatment on the scene.  The defendant was not on the scene at the time.  The case was investigated over the past several months extensively by members of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from members of the Town of Ulster Police Department, New York State Police, NY/NJ HIDTA, and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

“I commend the close collaboration by the multiple law enforcement agencies, and especially the Ulster County Sheriff’s Detective Division who dedicated many hours to building the evidence against this defendant and ensuring his surrender to authorities on these serious charges,” said Chief of the Narcotics, Guns and Gangs Bureau, Tara Waters, “I especially commend the lifesaving measures taken by the Deputy Sheriff on scene who drew upon his training and experience to save this victim’s life.” The case is being prosecuted by ADA Tara Waters. The defendant is represented by the Ulster County Public Defender’s Office. An indictment simply means that there is reasonable cause to believe that the charged crimes were committed. Any defendant retains their presumption of innocence until and unless the person pleads guilty, or the prosecution proves such guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
