Ulster County Revitalization Opportunity Areas

Ulster County is conducting a countywide revitalization planning process with funding from the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS) Brownfield Opportunity Area Grant program. Five areas within the County were selected to receive revitalization opportunities evaluations for the purposes of developing pre-nomination studies.

The Five Revitalization Opportunity Areas

Midtown Kingston

The Midtown Kingston Revitalization opportunities report focuses on areas along and off the Broadway corridor. The study area mirrors the boundaries and focuses of the City’s initial proposal for Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding and presents a range of diverse revitalization opportunities for the business owners, property owners, the community, City and County to consider. The opportunities in this report can help: • Build on Midtown’s successful redevelopment and greenway trail investments.

  • Attract state funding and private investment incentives.
  • Revitalize underutilized sites, vacant areas, and known brownfield sites.
  • Increase recreation and open space.
  • Improve neighborhood housing and quality of life.
Kerhonkson

The Kerhonkson opportunities report focuses on the Hamlet and its gateways along Route 209 including areas within the Towns of Rochester and Wawarsing. The study looks at current conditions and identifies ideas for the Towns, business and property owners to consider. The opportunities in this report can help: 

  • Attract state funding and private investment incentives.
  • Revitalize underutilized sites and areas. 
  • Increase recreation and open space.
  • Upgrade infrastructure
Ellenville/Wawarsing

Two areas were selected in the Ellenville/Wawarsing area. The two areas are:

  • Ellenville – South: Areas along key commercial and industrial corridors within the Village.
  • Ellenville – North: Focused on industrial, commercial and vacant areas north of Beer Kill in the Village of Ellenville and Town of Wawarsing.

The two studies look at current conditions and community priorities and identify ideas for the Town, Village and property owners to consider. The opportunities in the opportunities reports can help: 

  • Attract state funding and private investment incentives. 
  • Revitalize underutilized sites and areas
  • Increase access to recreation areas, trails, and open space.
  • Upgrade municipal infrastructure
Saugerties

The Saugerties opportunities report focuses on areas around Exit 20 in both the Town and Village of Saugerties. The study looks at current conditions and identifies ideas for the Town, Village and property owners to consider. The opportunities in this report can help:

  • Attract state funding and private investment incentives.
  • Revitalize underutilized sites and areas.
  • Upgrade infrastructure.
